Identifying Genuine Cartier Signatures: What Dealers Check First
Cartier authentication starts with the signature. Engraving style, depth, and placement tell you more than any serial number. Here's what dealers actually look for.
Cartier Panthère diamond ring — authentic Cartier carries consistent signatures and hallmarks
The Cartier Signature
The Cartier signature is hand-engraved, not stamped. The style varies by era and piece type.
Engraving depth:
- Consistent, not too deep or shallow
- Same depth as accompanying marks (serials, hallmarks)
- No "scratchy" or uneven appearance
Font evolution:
- Vintage (pre-1980s): Slightly irregular, hand-engraved feel
- Modern (1980s-2000s): More standardized but still hand-engraved
- Recent (2000s+): Laser engraving on some pieces, still precise
Placement by piece type:
- Rings: Inside shank, centered or offset
- Bracelets: Interior curve, near clasp or serial
- Necklaces: Clasp tag or near clasp
- Earrings: Back or post
What to check:
- Consistency with era
- Matching engraving technique across all marks
- Location where Cartier places it on this piece type
Hallmark Systems by Origin
Cartier uses different hallmark systems depending on where the piece was made or hallmarked.
French eagle head:
- Official French guarantee mark for 18k gold (750‰)
- Left-facing eagle head profile
- Required on gold pieces made/sold in France
- Appears with Cartier signature
Swiss sun/moon:
- Swiss precious metal control mark
- Sun (18k gold) or moon (platinum) symbol
- For pieces made or hallmarked in Switzerland
- Often with Swiss dog head or bear hallmark
American — no poinçon required:
- U.S. pieces may have no official hallmark
- May show "Cartier" + "750" or "PT950"
- No eagle head or Swiss marks
- Still authentic if signature and construction match
Other countries:
- UK: Crown + numeral (18, 750, etc.)
- Italy: Star + number code
- Dubai/Asia: May have local hallmarks
Key point: The hallmark should match the piece's origin story. A "French" Cartier without eagle head is suspicious.
Serial Number Format
Cartier serial numbers have a specific format and placement.
Oval cartouche:
- Serial numbers are often within an oval border
- The oval is engraved, not stamped
- Consistent with Cartier's engraving style
Letter+number format:
- Modern: Letter prefix + numbers (A12345)
- Vintage: May be numbers only
- Format should match era
Where it appears:
- Near the Cartier signature
- Same surface as hallmarks
- Placement varies by piece type (see serial number guide)
What matters:
- Engraving quality matches signature
- Format appropriate for era
- Not a standalone authentication feature
Love Bracelet Specifics
The Love bracelet has details fakes often get wrong.
Four screws:
- Exactly four screws, no more, no less
- Screws are flat, not domed
- Screw slots align (modern) or alternate (vintage)
Weight:
- Size 16 (medium) weighs ~47g in 18k gold
- Significant heft — feels solid
- Too light suggests plating or hollow construction
Satin inner surface:
- Interior has a satin (brushed) finish
- Not polished like the exterior
- Consistent across entire interior
Screwdriver slot pattern:
- Slots are precise, not ragged
- Depth consistent
- Modern: all slots align (12:00 position)
- Vintage: may alternate
Screwdriver:
- Comes with a specific Cartier screwdriver
- Modern: black plastic handle with metal tip
- Vintage: may vary
Panthère Motif
The Panthère collection requires specific craftsmanship.
Articulation:
- Body segments move fluidly
- Tail, limbs, head have articulation points
- Not a rigid casting
Hand-set vs machine pavé:
- High-end Panthère pieces have hand-set pavé
- Stones are evenly set, no gaps
- Prongs are neat, consistent
- Machine pavé on some lower-cost pieces
Emerald eye setting:
- Eyes are emerald cabochons
- Set securely, not glued
- Color matches across eyes
Craftsmanship:
- No visible casting seams
- Details crisp (whiskers, claws)
- Gold weight substantial
Trinity Ring
The Trinity ring has specific construction details.
How the junction pivots:
- Three bands interlock smoothly
- They rotate independently
- No binding or friction
Inner engraving:
- Cartier signature inside one band
- May include metal stamps (750, etc.)
- Serial number may be present
Weight and feel:
- Substantial for its size
- Bands are rounded, not flat
- Finish is high polish
Modern vs vintage:
- Vintage may have different engraving style
- Older examples may lack serial
- Gold colors consistent across bands
Red Flags Checklist
When evaluating Cartier:
□ Signature issues: Wrong font, depth, placement for era □ Hallmark mismatches: French piece without eagle head, Swiss without sun/moon □ Serial number problems: Wrong format, poor engraving, missing oval cartouche □ Love bracelet deviations: Wrong screw count/alignment, light weight, polished interior □ Panthère flaws: Poor articulation, messy pavé, glued eyes, casting seams □ Trinity issues: Bands don't rotate, uneven engraving, light weight □ Price anomaly: Significantly below market for apparent authenticity □ Missing marks: No signatures/hallmarks where expected □ Construction shortcuts: Casting porosity, rough edges, poor finish □ Seller resistance: Won't provide hallmark/serial photos
Putting It Together
Authentic Cartier shows consistency across all elements:
- Signature matches era and piece type
- Hallmarks appropriate for origin
- Serial format fits production period
- Construction quality meets luxury standards
- Weight and feel substantial
One inconsistency might be explainable; multiple require expert evaluation.
